First – platinum
comes from the Spanish language, platina meaning – silver and is
pronounced PLAT-n-en.
It is classified as a metal platinum and naturally has Pt as its’
metallurgical symbol. Platinum is a soft, dense, ductile metal that is
highly resistant to corrosion, which accounts for its value. You’ll
find a lot of platinum in high end jewelry, wires, electrical contacts
and laboratory vessels.
Platinum when heated, it expands at nearly the same rate as
soda-lime-silica glass, so it is used to make sealed electrodes in
glass systems. It is also used as a reliable coating for missile nose
cones, jet engine fuel nozzles and other devices, which are regularly
subjected to high temperatures of long periods.
Have you ever wondered, what are the materials wires and screws made
up of, which keeps the furnaces remain intact even when subjected to
very high temperatures? Yes, they are made out of platinum. You will
also find platinum anodes in cathodic protection systems. The metal
prevents corrosion, in the ships, underwater pipelines and the harbor
steel piers from corroding.
Platinum, may have just been discovered in the late 17th century, but
it has undoubtedly found its firm place in our lives, in work and
play......
